Overall I am a fan of Melissa and Doug products. This puzzle was bought for my son’s third birthday. It sat unused for about six months until my son took an interest in using it as more than just family room fodder. As an active kid, it is amazing to see him work for 30 minutes straight putting it together without help. Although it is not age appropriate my one year old, he also loves playing with the pieces. However, not for their intended use. He chews and sucks on them a little but he is not a big chewer. Otherwise, I would have to keep it completely out of reach. The peices are pretty solid and smooth but given enough rough treatment they will splinter. I have had a few pieces chip off but that is after some major wear and tear. My son’s fourth birthday is coming up and I have already bought four more of these puzzles for him.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for a 2.5 y.o. boy. It is probably better suited for a 3 – 4 y.o., given that it has 48 pieces, but he loves the puzzle. It was a hit. The puzzle is well-made, with bright colors.
All of the Melissa and Doug puzzles are the highest quality puzzles I’ve ever seen. My son, now 4, has LOVED puzzles since he was just a year old and these have always been our choice. They stand up to his rough and tumble way of playing and I have even accidentally stepped on them many times when he forgets to put them away and they’ve never broke or even cracked. LOVE these puzzles and will continue to buy them. Although I think the 48 piece puzzles may be better for younger children. My son still enjoys them but after two times he is now able to put it together REALLY fast. I think it’s time to move up to something bigger…
Bought this puzzle for preschool as an extra activity to accompany the book, Pirates Don’t Change Diapers. Was well-received and enjoyed by all.
There’s nothing to dislike about this puzzle. As with many Melissa and Doug puzzles, thought has been given to everything, even the placement of lines within the image and how they bridge the edges of the puzzle pieces. Gorgeous colours, good construction, a cute design, and enough repetition of thematic elements to give young minds small problems to ponder. My 4-year-old has gone on to tougher puzzles, but still likes to put this one together on occasion.
What I like about these puzzles is that the pieces don’t keep falling apart like cardboard ones do so it keeps my son from getting frustrated. The pictures also have enough interesting things happening on each piece that it is not too difficult to find the neighboring pieces.
This is a great puzzle. The pieces are durable and it fits together so nicely/tightly so that you can travel with it and not be afraid that you are going to lose pieces. My 2.5 year old is a big fan and it is nice to find a puzzle that is durable for him. He really enjoys the pirates also. Another great product from Melissa and Doug!
Love the wooden pieces and the wooden tray. This puzzle is so much more durable than the ones with cardboard pieces. I just wish Melissa and Doug would offer this type of puzzle with 100 or more pieces. My grandchildren have a great time with these but the variety is limited and they will soon outgrow the challenge of a simple 48 piece puzzle.
