My 2 1/2 year old son really loves this toy. He loves to pick up the cargo with Cranky and then drop it in a basket or somewhere else. He also uses it to pick up his other trains since the magnet picks up the connections on the front and back of the trains. He doesn’t have any trouble using it and it made a great addition to his Thomas train set. That being said, this is our second Cranky the Crane. We gave him one for Christmas and had to return it. The top part of the Crane disconnected from the base when my son picked it up. It was defective and our new Cranky doesn’t seem to have this problem.

Cranky the Crane is fun and provides hours of excitment. Cranky’s educational value teaches children how to load and unload cargo on to the compatible train cars. My Cranky is in good condition but sometimes its pulley string somtimes gets tangled while loading and unloading the cargo. I strongly recomend Cranky the Crane!
We bought this toy for our twin sons for Easter. They are 3 and LOVE Thomas! We were dissapointed that, when my husband took it out of the box, the head fell off. We thought about returning it, but the boys love it so much, we just can’t bear to take it away from them. I admit that it is a pain to have to keep putting the head back on, but one of my 3 yr olds can do that himself (much to his joyous discovery!) so this makes it easier. My 16 month old loves it too. Now all we have to do is get the Down By The Docks set (minus Cranky) and they will be all set!
MY GRANDSON WHO IS 5 YEARS OLD LOVES THOMAS AND HAS LOTS OF IT. HE ESPECIALLY WANTED “CRANKY” AND WAS THRILLED WHEN HE GOT IT. IT HAS MORE TO IT THAN JUST LOOKING OR TURNING A HANDLE, HE HAD TO THINK ABOUT SEVERAL MOVES WITH IT. OVERALL WE THOUGHT IT A VERY GOOD CHOICE FOR HIM.
My 3 year old loves playing with the magnet to see what sticks, what he can lift, and often toys need rescuing from the top of Cranky. He’s spent hours with it in the last month
I bought this for my 2year old grandson. He loves it! It helps with his coordination, patience and teaches him how something function. At this time, he is very interested in how things work. I would say this is one of the best educational toys I have gotten for him which he enjoys so much.
We are happy with the purchase. The crane is good quality, sturdy, painted in nice colors (grey+green). We have not experienced the problems with head coming off (yet?). My son plays with this toy a lot with or without train set. I like that control levers (that allow to turn the head and move the magnet up and down) for this version of Cranky are manual…something to keep my son busy. I am happy that I did not buy more expensive recent automated versions of Cranky (though I have not tested them myself) . My son sometimes compares this crane to another which has a hook instead of magnet…it appears that he would prefer more realistic hook to magnet. The yellow cargo box appears the same as item recalled in 2007. When I checked the codes on the back of the blocks, the particular one that was sent to me was said not to be affected by the recall. All in all, my son likes this toy:).
